Learn how the Berlin Wall was built, expanded, and ultimately collapsed in 1989 during a talk by retired Army Colonel and historian Mike Ellicott on Feb. 21.
Shortly after midnight on August 13, 1961, East German workers began erecting a crude barbed wire fence between East and West Berlin. That initial fence eventually grew into a sophisticated 96-mile-long concrete wall surrounding West Berlin and a 858-mile-long system of fences and walls dividing East and West Germany. Both stood until November 9, 1989.
Join local amateur historian and retired Army Colonel Mike Ellicott at 10:30 on Saturday, February 21 as he describes the history, construction, and ultimate fall of the wall, East Germany, and its Communist Government. He and his family served nearly fourteen years in Germany between 1969 and 1994, most of those years stationed near the Inter German Border.
