Step back in time and experience one of the most powerful natural events in U.S. history with The New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811–1812, presented by Dr. Kent Moran from the University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information.
Join us on Friday, July 24, 2026 from 10:30–11:30 a.m. in the Storytelling Room to learn about the series of massive earthquakes that shook the Mid-South over 200 years ago. Discover what happened during these historic events, how they changed the landscape, and what life was like for the people who experienced them.
Through stories and historical accounts, this program brings the past to life and shows how scientists study earthquakes before modern technology existed.

About the Presenter:
Dr. Kent Moran of the University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information specializes in studying historical earthquake data. Since 1999, he has researched firsthand accounts of the 1811–1812 New Madrid earthquakes using newspapers, archives, and other records, helping preserve and share these important stories through projects like The New Madrid Compendium.
